The name of the Pigato grape variety derives from the Ligurian dialect 'pigau', meaning 'spotted'. The term 'macchiato' in fact refers to the brown speckling that appears when the berries are ripe. The berries are also elongated spheroid in shape with a persistent and prominent umbilicus.
